Aktor Jurassic Park Sam Neill Meninggal Dunia pada Usia 78 Tahun

Aktor senior asal Selandia Baru, Sam Neill, meninggal dunia pada usia 78 tahun di Sydney, Australia, pada Senin (13/7/2026), setelah berjuang melawan kanker darah limfoma T-sel angioimunoblastik stadium tiga.

Kabar duka tersebut diumumkan secara resmi oleh pihak keluarga melalui pernyataan di akun Instagram pribadi mendiang. Pihak keluarga menyatakan bahwa kepergian peraih gelar ksatria (Sir) pada tahun 2022 tersebut terjadi secara mendadak namun dalam kondisi bebas dari kanker.

"It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life." ujar pihak keluarga Sam Neill, dalam pernyataan resminya.

Keluarga juga menyampaikan rasa terima kasih mendalam kepada tim medis di Rumah Sakit Swasta St Vincent atas perawatan yang diberikan selama masa-masa terakhir sang aktor.

"The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free. They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care." kata pihak keluarga Sam Neill, melanjutkan.

Pihak keluarga meminta masyarakat untuk memberikan ruang privasi bagi mereka yang sedang berduka sebelum detail informasi lebih lanjut dibagikan.

"More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss." ucap pihak keluarga Sam Neill.

Wafatnya Neill memicu gelombang penghormatan dari para pemimpin negara. Perdana Menteri Selandia Baru, Christopher Luxon, menyebut Neill sebagai salah satu tokoh besar yang membawa kisah-kisah negaranya ke panggung dunia melalui industri film selama lebih dari 50 tahun.

"He started out when there was barely a film industry in this country to speak of," kata Christopher Luxon, Perdana Menteri Selandia Baru.

Luxon menambahkan bahwa kontribusi besar sang aktor akan membuat karya-karyanya tetap dicintai dan ditonton untuk waktu yang lama.

"For more than fifty years he took New Zealand stories to the world and his talents helped make our film industry into what it is today – one of our greatest cultural exports. His work will be watched and loved long after all of us." ujar Christopher Luxon, menambahkan.

Pujian serupa datang dari Perdana Menteri Australia, Anthony Albanese, yang mengenang keteguhan Neill dalam menghadapi penyakitnya dengan penuh martabat dan humor.

"Sam Neill starred in so many beloved Australian stories and he earned a special place in Australian hearts. Wry and dry, thoughtful and laconic, Sam fought illness with the same dignity, humour and conviction that gave strength to his every performance. He will be much mourned and long remembered. May he rest in peace." tulis Anthony Albanese, Perdana Menteri Australia.

Semasa hidupnya, Neill dikenal lewat perannya sebagai paleontolog Dr. Alan Grant dalam film blockbuster Jurassic Park (1993) arahan Steven Spielberg. Karakter ilmiah yang ia mainkan memberikan peringatan ikonik mengenai risiko kloning dinosaurus.

"Dinosaurs and man, two species separated by 65 million years of evolution have just been suddenly thrown back into the mix together. How can we possibly have the slightest idea what to expect?" kata Sam Neill, dalam perannya sebagai Dr. Alan Grant di Jurassic Park.

Meskipun sempat absen dalam sekuel kedua, ia kembali memerankan karakter pahlawan aksi tersebut dalam Jurassic Park III (2001) dan Jurassic World Dominion (2022).

"It’s probably a little late to learn these things, but I finally feel I’ve worked out how to be an action hero," ujar Sam Neill, kepada Daily News of New York pada 2001.

Selain waralaba dinosaurus tersebut, Neill menunjukkan fleksibilitas akting luar biasa dalam film The Piano (1993), Omen III (1981), The Hunt for Red October (1990), hingga serial televisi Peaky Blinders. Pada tahun 2023, ia merilis sebuah memoar yang merefleksikan perjuangannya melawan penyakit kanker.

"I said I didn't want the title for 10 or 12 years," tutur Sam Neill, pada 2023 mengenai gelar ksatrianya.

Gelar tersebut akhirnya ia terima setelah menyadari kondisi kesehatannya yang sempat memburuk beberapa tahun sebelumnya.

"Then when I thought I was dying a couple of years ago I thought, 'Oh bugger it, I may as well go out with the title,' so I changed my mind." ucap Sam Neill.

Dalam wawancara lain dengan The Guardian, ia mengakui masa-masa sulit menjalani kemoterapi bulanan, namun hal itu justru membuatnya lebih bersyukur atas kehidupan.

"I can’t pretend that the last year hasn’t had its dark moments," kata Sam Neill, kepada The Guardian pada 2023.

Ia menegaskan bahwa setiap momen kegelapan justru memperjelas arti kebahagiaan dan persahabatan yang ia miliki.

"But those dark moments throw the light into sharp relief, you know, and have made me grateful for every day and immensely grateful for all my friends." ujar Sam Neill.
