Thomas Tuchel Coret Harry Maguire dari Skuad Piala Dunia Inggris

Pelatih Tim Nasional Inggris Thomas Tuchel mencoret bek tengah Harry Maguire dari skuad final berisi 26 pemain untuk Piala Dunia 2026 menjelang pengumuman resmi pada Jumat pagi.

Kabar mengejutkan ini dikonfirmasi langsung oleh Maguire melalui akun media sosial pribadinya pada Kamis malam waktu setempat setelah menerima panggilan telepon dari Tuchel.

Selain Maguire, bintang Chelsea Cole Palmer dan gelandang Manchester City Phil Foden juga dilaporkan absen dari skuad yang akan berangkat ke Amerika Serikat, Kanada, dan Meksiko tersebut.

Sebaliknya, penyerang Al-Ahli Ivan Toney justru mendapatkan pemanggilan tak terduga ke dalam tim nasional meskipun baru bermain selama dua menit di bawah asuhan Tuchel.

Pencoretan Maguire menjadi sorotan besar mengingat kontribusinya yang tampil apik bersama Manchester United di bawah asuhan Michael Carrick dengan memulai 14 dari 16 pertandingan terakhir di Liga Utama Inggris.

Maguire sempat kembali dipanggil ke skuad Inggris pada bulan Maret lalu serta tampil mengesankan saat melawan Uruguay dan Jepang.

Melalui unggahan di media sosial, pemain berusia 33 tahun tersebut mengungkapkan kekecewaan mendalam atas keputusan sepihak dari sang manajer baru.

"Tadinya aku merasa percaya diri aku bisa memainkan peran besar di musim panas ini untuk negaranya setelah musim yang telah kujalani. Aku terkejut dan kecewa dengan keputusannya," kata Harry Maguire, Bek Tengah Manchester United.

Mantan kapten Leicester City tersebut menambahkan bahwa mewakili negaranya di turnamen internasional selalu menjadi kehormatan terbesar selama karier sepak bolanya.

"I was confident I could [have] played a major part this summer for my country after the season I've had. I've been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I've loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years. I wish the players, all the best this summer." ujar Harry Maguire, Bek Tengah Manchester United.

Keputusan Tuchel ini didasari oleh pandangannya mengenai hierarki bek tengah, di mana ia secara terbuka menempatkan pemain lain di atas posisi Maguire.

Setelah pertandingan persahabatan melawan Uruguay, Tuchel memberikan evaluasi jujur mengenai performa solid yang ditunjukkan oleh Maguire di lini belakang.

"I haven't changed my mind. But I see other players I like to start for us, other players ahead with a different profile." kata Thomas Tuchel, Pelatih Timnas Inggris.

Mantan pelatih Chelsea tersebut menegaskan bahwa dirinya lebih memilih profil pemain yang memiliki mobilitas berbeda untuk mengisi formasi utamanya.

"I got exactly what I thought, solid, solid central-defender play. That's what he does. Very good on the ball, very calm, strong in the air and in the weapon for set-pieces. I haven't changed my mind, but I see other players I like to start for us, I see other players ahead with a different profile. I see Ezri Konsa ahead, I see Marc Guehi ahead. It's no secret. I see Trevoh Chalobah on the level of mobility was slightly ahead of him. Also John Stones, but he had injuries, so he needed to come to camp." kata Thomas Tuchel, Pelatih Timnas Inggris.

Di sisi lain, pemanggilan Ivan Toney memicu perdebatan karena striker berusia 30 tahun tersebut bermain di Liga Profesional Arab Saudi bersama Al-Ahli.

Toney telah mencetak 32 gol dalam 32 pertandingan musim ini dan menyatakan adaptasinya dengan cuaca panas menjadi keuntungan besar bagi tim nasional.

"It would mean a lot [to go to the World Cup]. I have never played at a World Cup. It would be a dream; everyone dreams of that. If we were to win it, that would be so big for the country. You have visions of what could happen. If it comes true, it would be a blessing. Maybe [I could bring an advantage due to the heat]. There are great players in the squad and some top English strikers, so I guess everyone will have an opportunity, as everyone will be able to adapt to the heat, but you can say I'm a bit more used to it than others. It's tough because you have to change your game slightly. You can't be running around crazy because otherwise you run out of steam. You have to be more strategic with the runs you make. I guess I won't have to adapt. I've played in 30-plus degrees here, and I feel like I'm adapted to it. All I can do is keep scoring goals. Asosiasi Sepak Bola Inggris (FA) dijadwalkan menyerahkan daftar resmi 26 pemain kepada FIFA pada 31 Mei 2026 menjelang laga pembuka Grup L melawan Kroasia pada 17 Juni 2026.
