Apple Tutup Permanen Tiga Toko Ritel di Amerika Serikat

Apple menutup secara permanen tiga toko ritelnya di Amerika Serikat pada Sabtu, 20 Juni 2026, menyusul penurunan kondisi bisnis di pusat perbelanjaan lokasi toko-toko tersebut beroperasi. Salah satu lokasi yang ditutup adalah toko di Towson Town Center, Maryland, yang mencetak sejarah sebagai gerai Apple pertama di AS yang berhasil membentuk serikat pekerja pada 2022.

Dilansir dari 9to5Mac, dua lokasi lain yang turut berhenti beroperasi adalah toko di Trumbull Mall, Connecticut, dan toko di Shops at North County, Escondido, California. Manajemen Apple menyatakan bahwa keputusan sulit ini diambil setelah mengevaluasi kinerja lokasi eksisting di tengah hengkangnya beberapa peritel besar serta memburuknya situasi mal setempat.

Kebijakan pemutusan operasional ini memicu polemik karena perbedaan perlakuan transfer karyawan antara gerai yang memiliki serikat pekerja dan yang tidak. Pekerja di toko Connecticut dan California otomatis dialihkan ke toko Apple terdekat, sementara sekitar 90 hingga 100 staf di Towson diwajibkan melamar ulang dari awal karena terikat ketentuan perjanjian kerja bersama.

Pihak serikat pekerja dan sejumlah pejabat publik menuduh Apple sengaja menutup gerai Towson sebagai tindakan diskriminasi untuk menghukum aktivitas pengorganisasian karyawan. Tekanan politik terhadap Apple terus meningkat melalui surat protes dari delegasi kongres Maryland, Kaukus Progresif Kongres, hingga Wali Kota Baltimore.

Mengenai alasan penutupan, pihak korporasi merilis pembelaan resmi terkait kondisi ekosistem ritel di ketiga lokasi tersebut.

"At Apple, we are constantly striving to deliver exceptional service and great experiences for our customers. As we continue investing to expand and enhance our retail stores and offerings worldwide, we remain deliberate about evaluating our existing locations to ensure that we can meet our customers’ needs in the best way. Following the departure of several retailers and declining conditions at Trumbull Mall, the Shops at North County, and Towson Town Center, we’ve made the difficult decision to close our stores at these locations." kata pihak Apple dalam pernyataan resminya.

Di sisi lain, asosiasi pekerja menilai tindakan pembedaan peluang kerja bagi staf yang berserikat melanggar undang-undang ketenagakerjaan federal.

"This is about whether workers are treated fairly under the law or punished for exercising their rights. […] Apple is denying union-represented workers the same opportunities it is giving to others — and doing so because these workers chose to organize. That is discrimination, and it is exactly what federal labor law is designed to prevent." ujar Brian Bryant, Presiden Internasional Uni IAM.

Ia mendesak raksasa teknologi tersebut untuk menghormati kesepakatan bersama dan memberikan hak transfer yang setara sebelum tenggat penutupan toko berakhir.

"Mayor Scott understands what’s at stake here, not just for our members but for the city of Baltimore. Apple workers in Towson voted to join the IAM, fought for and won a contract, and are now being punished for it. Apple signed a collective bargaining agreement that requires equal treatment. It is time for Apple to honor that agreement and do right by these workers before June 20." kata Brian Bryant menambahkan.

Dukungan terhadap para pekerja juga disuarakan oleh kepemimpinan daerah yang menilai hilangnya gerai tersebut merugikan aksesibilitas layanan publik masyarakat setempat.

"My office stands in full support of IAM Union Local 4538 Apple workers at the Towson Town Center. Baltimore is a union town, and we are known as the ‘Birthplace of American Railroading.’ We stand with the IAM Union, which began as a rail union and in 2022 organized the first Apple store in the nation, located at the Towson Town Center." kata Brandon M. Scott, Wali Kota Baltimore.

Ia menyayangkan keputusan korporasi besar tersebut yang dinilai meninggalkan komunitas lokal yang telah berkontribusi pada kesuksesan perusahaan.

"When Apple walks away from Towson with no replacement store planned, it walks away from the communities that helped build its success, and pushes critical services further out of reach." tulis Brandon M. Scott dalam pernyataannya.

Gerakan serikat pekerja IAM Local 4538 di Towson sebelumnya dianggap sebagai pelopor dan model pergerakan bagi karyawan toko Apple di wilayah lain setelah berhasil menyepakati perjanjian kerja bersama pada tahun 2024.

"Our members at the Apple store in Towson proved that organizing works. Our members built power, negotiated a contract, and created a model for Apple store workers everywhere. Apple is now trying to make an example out of them.

We will not allow that to happen. The IAM stands firmly with our members in Towson, and we are grateful to Mayor Scott and every elected official who has refused to look away." kata David Sullivan, Wakil Presiden Jenderal Teritori Timur IAM.

Berdasarkan laporan AppleInsider, wilayah sekitar pusat perbelanjaan Towson Town Center memang terus sepi setelah kehilangan beberapa penyewa utama seperti Tommy Bahama, Banana Republic, dan Madewell, sementara Trumbull Mall dilaporkan gagal membayar pinjaman lebih dari 150 juta dolar AS.
